Behind the Work
An integral part of Rina Banerjee's sculptural work is the use of globally sourced objects.
Living in New York City, one of the many places the artist sources some of these unique objects is J&S Imports, one of the leading wholesalers of African imports for over half a century. From beads to masks J&S has been a constant source of inspiration and instrumental supplier of materials behind many works for the artist but perhaps none more vividly than "Viola of New Orleans..." featuring one of J&S' iconic imported African masks.
Below is a glimpse of the shop and a small selection of the kinds of pieces that strike the artist and link to The New York Times article "Mending a Heart, Finding A Calling", chronicling this New York City mainstay.
